THE WVFA

Established in parallel with the West Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the West Virginia Foundation for Architecture (WVFA) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to advancing architecture and improving the human environment in West Virginia by:

  • Supporting programs and projects that enhance living and working environments across the state.
     

  • Soliciting and utilizing gifts, grants, and legacies to fund education, preservation, research, and exhibitions related to architecture and its allied fields.
     

  • Providing scholarships, fellowships, and grants to support architectural studies.
     

  • Promoting public understanding of architecture’s history, quality, and social significance, with a focus on contributions made within West Virginia.
     

  • Establishing awards, prizes, and medals to recognize excellence in architecture and its allied disciplines.

WAYS TO GIVE

The West Virginia Foundation for Architecture (WVFA) funds scholarships and statewide programs that advance architectural education and public understanding of the built environment. Gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law. EIN: 82-1807534

1.  GIVE NOW (One-Time Gift)

Make an immediate impact on scholarships and programs.

How it works:  Donate securely online by credit/debit or ACH. Checks are also welcome.

​Receipts:  Instant email receipt for online gifts; mailed upon request for checks.

BY MAIL

Make checks payable to West Virginia Foundation for Architecture and mail to:
PO Box 813, Charleston, WV 25313. Please include your email for a receipt.

2. MONTHLY SUSTAINER

Provide steady support through an automatic monthly gift. You can adjust or cancel anytime.

Why it helps:  Reliable funding lets us plan scholarships and programs responsibly.

​Receipts:  Annual summary sent each January for your records.

3. LEADERSHIP CIRCLE ($1,000+ Annually)

Recognizes donors who provide major annual support.

TIERS

​Patron: $1,000 - $2,499

Benefactor: $2,500 - $4,999

Founder: $5,000+

​Recognition:  Listing on WVFA materials (opt-out available), invitations to select activities, and advance notice of initiatives.​​

4. CORPORATE & PROGRAM SPONSORSHIPS

Partner with WVFA to underwrite scholarships, public programs, or the Design Awards & Scholarship Gala.

Options:  Reliable funding lets us plan scholarships and programs responsibly.

​Note:  Sponsorships that include benefits (e.g., tickets, recognition ads) may affect tax deductibility; we’ll document the fair-market value.​​

5. PLANNED GIVING (Bequests & Beneficiary Designations)

Leave a legacy by including WVFA in your will, trust, or beneficiary forms (IRA, 401(k), life insurance).

Sample Will Language:  “I give [specific amount / percentage / residue] to West Virginia Foundation for Architecture, a nonprofit organization, EIN 82-1807534, with its principal office at PO Box 813, Charleston, WV 25313, to be used for its general charitable purposes.”

​Beneficiary Designations:  List “West Virginia Foundation for Architecture” (EIN 82-1807534) on your retirement or insurance account.​​

6. QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION (QCD)

If you’re 70½ or older, you may direct a gift from your IRA to WVFA. QCDs can satisfy all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution and may reduce taxable income.

 

STEPS

1. Ask your IRA custodian to issue the check payable to West Virginia Foundation for Architecture.

2. Have it mailed to PO Box 813, Charleston, WV 25313 with your name and contact info.

3. Notify us so we can identify and receipt the gift properly.

7. MATCHING GIFTS

Your employer may match your contribution, doubling or tripling your impact.

How:  Check with HR or your company’s giving portal, submit their form, and we’ll confirm.

8. NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS & ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTIONS

Create a named scholarship or strengthen the endowment to support students from West Virginia in perpetuity.

 

APPROACHES

​Annual Named Scholarship:  Funded each year at a level you choose.

​Endowed Scholarship:  Establish a fund that awards from investment earnings. We’ll work with you on criteria (school year, discipline focus, geographic ties).

DONOR SERVICES & RECEIPTS

​Receipts:  Emailed immediately for online gifts; mailed for checks and IRA once the gift is received.

​Designations:  You can direct gifts to scholarships, public programs, or “greatest need.”

Recognition:  Leadership Circle listings; opt-out anytime.
